I am getting a group of Pundamilia Nyereri (Igombe Island) and am setting them up in a 75 gal. Are zebra obliquidens different enough they could be in the same tank without risk of having hybrids? If the zebra won't work, what are some good tank mates for the nyereri? Thanks

There would be a very high chance of hybridizing.

For the most part, Vics are best kept in species only tanks.

The Zebra Obliquidens will not be good tank mates....they are far more aggressive than the Nyererei. The sp.44's are even more aggessive so they are not an option.

I would go with a flameback or Kyoga. You might even think about some blue bars.

Vics will easily breed other species, you will definitely get hybrids with females in the tank.

I keep 6 different Vics all in one tank but without females.

Okay, so no other vics. Would peacocks or any other rift lake cichlids work for tankmates? Or should I just plan on having one big ol' group of nyereri?

I vote for the big ole group!

I am starting to lean that way myself.

I have kept Peacocks with my Vics in the past and it has worked very well. Some of your less aggressive Mbuna work out too. In my 125g, I keep fish from all three major lakes...they are all one happy family.

Is your intent to breed your Igombe Is. colony? If so, you will end up with more fry than you know what to do with.

Keep us posted.

BTW, I believe that my 4 adult P.N.'s are Igombe Island. They are beautiful!
