Hey guys I was just wondering what Lake Victorian cichlids would be a good mix in a community tank. They will be in a 180gallon. I know their care and requirement. My concern is what species can be together without hybridizing. I plan on breeding them. Please provide the scientific name and possibly where I can order some. My best bet to get these guys are from CaliforCichlids.com so anything available now I can get easily. I live these fish's colors and in my opinion more interested than the mbuna. I look into getting groups of 6+ for each species.

vics can be very aggressive. Most cichlids can crossbreed and that is not cool for vics since they are highly endangered! I would try a single group of large malawi haps, like fossos, trout,or something more rare,or possibly a group of malawi haps,a group of vics, and a group of peacocks.the diversity of species will help to prevent crossbreeding.malawi trout and copadichromis azureus-copadichromis borlyi-rhoadesii-copadichromis taiwan reef-hybrid peacocks

Im only looking for haps just victorians. I have kept alot of the fish I see on your pics. Never kept victorians. Really would like 2 different species abd other kinds of cichlids for upper and bottom parts.

I know that the elongated types (Matubi Hunter, etc) can be kept with some of the more standard red ones with little concern of hybridization. I'm thinking of doing the same with some fish I picked up at the ACA convention last week. I am hoping that A. nubilia is also different enough to toss in as well.

Good luck. :)

I'm thinking of just putting in some zebra oblidiquens, some haplochromis burtoni, pundamilia nyereirei "anchor island", and some neochromis or the piebald types paralabidichromis chromogybos. Will definetely try to get the matubi hunter! All these cichlids have different coloring and patterns and hopefully wont hybridize ever. Tgey will be put in a 6 fiot by 18 inch by 2 foot tank with lots of rockwork and driftwood with anubias and java fern on it. Hopefully my set up will work out. Any thoughts?
