After 4 months & 3 weeks to the day, mama motoro gives birth to 5 pups! Though only 3 made it they are all healthy & happy and will be reunited soon once they get a little bigger. They're about to get their first feeding in the next few hours please come back & see them chomp on some bloodworms! Baby motoros born with 3" disc diameter and a 3" tail!

Live birth video from 3.20.22

First look at the pups under light since they were born yesterday, looking healthy + happy just waiting a little bit to give them their 1st feed. A few posts recommended waiting a day or 2 so let's wait till this evening and we'll give it a shot. Had a look at 1 of tem during transfer & she's a female gonna have a look at the other 2 when they start climbing around on the glass.

Some close-ups under the light from this afternoon 3.21.22

I've been trolling some threads and most keepers recommend feeding by day 2 so let's give it until midnight or early tmw AM for the 1st blood worm buffet!

Day 3 and they’re looking A+++! First batch of 2 pups back in October only one of the 2 made it though passed away on the second day. It was almost translucent like as if it was not yet fully developed but was the cutest little ray I kept even for a day or 2. That time I didn’t even know she was giving birth until I saw a white cloud in the tank followed by the 1st pup floating around aimlessly then the next about was immediately attacked by the father. This time around it happened in the middle of a water change as if she was waiting for me to be there so I could divert the dad to not eat his own babies lol!

Wanted to post a feeding video on these 3 but they’re not responding aggressively yet mostly just inspecting them & maybe nibbling for a taste here and there.

maybe tmw day 4 they’ll start to be more active and after a couple of good feeds I’ll take them out of this 10g quarantine and house them in the 40g for a month before letting them hang with the parents in the main tank.

Not big eaters yet probably once at 8am & then at 12am if that..maybe another week or so they'll start to gain a proper appetite. Still trying the bloodworms mostly but maybe switch to mysis or hikari sinking pellets no rush i guess these little pups will be 2 weeks old on Sunday around 7:25pm. On the gender reveal it's 1 male & 2 Females. The mom is 27"+ and the dad is 17" max so we'll see how big they'll get, hopefully will stay on the smaller size. Moved them from the 10g to the 40g last Friday & they're roaming though mostly hangout underneath the canister. 2 like to skim the surface while the other 1 still just pretty much chills. Will probably add a school of guppies in here for fun or maybe they'll even be on the menu!

Congrats on the pups! I never had much luck with feeding blood worms to rays. Maybe try chopped earth worms to start. Key is small pieces. I've had pups go a week plus before they started to eat.

Thanks spotfin spotfin ! These guys are fun to keep I wish they stayed this small forever! I remember when I 1st got the parents in 2017 or 2018 they were roughly 10" size and we're taking bloodworms by the chunk. Kept them with a Gourami and was happy I didn't have to feed different foods for different fish as they all just ate the same thing. They all eventually stopped bloodworms and just mainly stuck to krill & now they're so spoiled on hikari frozen they don't even go for market prawn anymore, once in a while when I run out of frozen they'll go for the hikari pellets but just make a mess with them.

For the pups yep you're definitely right on the no bloodworms. I read a few threads and blackworms were the go to but I don't have any in stock & not really keen on keeping a live batch around so was hoping they'd respond to the next best thing. I tried mysis last night though & they went at it pretty good. I might need to turn the powerhead off when I feed them next time as the mysis didn't sink as consistently as bloodworms do and they were filter feeding with their mouths open while trying to snag some that landed near them lol. Last time I had some leftover bait I tried giving some night crawlers to the mama ray and she totally freaked out when she tried to eat it was hilarious I think she didn't expect it to be alive! The pups though will probably take them chopped up or at least fingers crossed as I'd like to get them more on a variety vs just one staple. I'll keep trying to mix it up!
