Since I am planning to go to Mexico next February for my two weeks of vacation, I am collecting information on interesting habitats on the peninsula of Yucatan. Does anybody of you have some links with videos to share where you can see some habitats and cichlids?
I don't have any links, but I have taken some video. Unfortunately it is low-res video and I don't really have any way to upload video with our slow (and I mean slow) dial-up internet.
I think one of the best places to easily see cichlids is a place called Cenote Manatí. It is located a few miles from Tulum in a place called Tank-Ha. It costs a couple bucks to snorkel there, but it is well worth it. The cichlids (urophthalmus) tend to hang out at the inlet end of the cenote, farthest from the entrance/beach.
If you have a rental car it is really easy to get there, you just take a left off the main highway a couple miles before Tulum. Follow the road down to the beach, and then turn left again. The cenote is on the left side of the road, you can't miss it. This place is really cool and usually deserted. It is so good I am actually a little hesitant about posting this...
@dan: i just saved your description, if you are worried it could become too crowded you can delete it. Thanks for sharing!
@ ed: since I will have to fly for nearly 20 hours I guess I won't try to bring some fish back to Europe, but I am planning to take loads and loads of pictures
By the way: if anybody has some comments about turtles in cenotes or lagoons I would like to read that as well! ;-)
cenote azul is a great place to snorkle too, there are dempseys and uros there and the biggest velifera i ever saw males were 6"+....its right off the main highway
