Vieja and a Pike

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Which Vieja and which Crenicichla species? Some might work together in a tank of that size, others wouldn't be sucha good idear...;).
Viejas generally get pretty large though, so both species in a 90gal might be a little crowded.

I currently house 3 pikes and 5 vieja in my 125 with 4 silver dollars.
Two pikes are 8 and 9 inces respectively and a 7". The Viejas are from 4-6 inches. The only aggression I have so far is between the Viejas. But it is not to bad Yet.
But this is only my grow out tank for now they will all be moved to at least a 240 within the next few months.

Be wary of Vieja maculicauda (Black Belt cichlids) they are more aggressive than the other Vieja species.

I have a 12" male black belt that I have to keep all by himself. He dominated every tank I put him in and tried to kill every tank mate. I tried putting him in a 6' 125 gallon with 2 10" breeding oscars; after about 2 days this newcomer to the tank established his dominance and started beating the Os up. He did the same with a 10" managuense male in a 5' 120 gallon.

My wife calls him "big mean fish". :grinno:

Anyway... This has been my experience with them, and I have read on here from others that they are mean for Viejas too.

Good luck with whatever to decide.

Man Im all about viejas and pikes right now. Got 3 synsipilums growing up right now.

Glad to see another Pikeaholic with eye for the beauty of Vieja. They are a large and colorful species, with lots of character. And plenty of attitude!
