Couple videos of my tank. It is a 225 gallon 72x27 tank. These have all been raised together since juveniles. 4 Vieja Zonatus(3 male 1 female) 3 Vieja Syn(1 male, 2 females) 1 Salvini(female?) 1 albino channel cat. I have 1 Zon pair established in there. Thinking of whittling stock down. Maybe 2 Vieja pairs? All male tank? Suggestions?

All male tank or one pair, full grown I don't think there would be enough room for any one to escape a breeding pair.

Looks great, the problem with thinning out is a new hierarchy gets worked out, sometimes that can be brutal.an all M or F tank could work.I would think 6 fish(cichlids) might help spread out aggression.another idea would be keep 1 large pair, and a smaller pair of maybe convicts, panamensis, etc.if I was gonna switch fish out,I rearrange tank decor, and put new fish in.have a divider ready.I think channel cat will outgrow your tank and they also need brackish water later in life

Yeah been leaning towards all male tank. I love the idea of the pair but really don't want to get rid of my male Syn. Will probably try to keep the Salvini in either tank scenario as well

Thanks. Yeah that is my fear. The tank is pretty chill now and if something changes who knows how it will affect things. That's the fun of it as well. Oh yeah that channel will outgrow the tank eventually. Was in some kids 10 gallon and I helped out. Don't know the future plans for it yet. Never heardcthe brackish thing though will have research that

Does all male synspilum vieja grow a nuchal hump? I'm thinking to make a full switch from owning flowerhorn to vieja if the male grow a nuchal hump.

If kept in pairs or with other cichlids then yes they will, if kept solo possibley not.
It does take alot longer for it to develop then with flowerhorns, with vieja it's all about patients.

definitely patience. I've had several Syn's, (no clue what sex, except the one I have now is almost certainly a male), and I think you need to try a few until you get one that looks the way you want. They seem to vary a good bit in body shape, and nuchal hump.

As for the OP's question ..... I think I'd do an all male tank. Though I think it's really cool to watch a pair spawn, with Vieja....the fish are so big....so many fry.....you'd need several tanks to really grow any out. Syn's you might want to do that so you can get a really good one/big one...but with Zonatus? They all seem to look exactly the same when grown, and they all seem to reach 12+ inches, same blue coloring....are you really gonna get a better Zonatus if you grow out a batch of fry?
