hello MFK.i have a question regarding vieja argentea.:) is it a fast growing cichlid like oscar or a slow growing cichlid.and vieja argentea is ok with geophagus species in the same tank.? and any other SA/CA cichlid to be compatible with?i heard that argentea is one bad-ass cichlid.sorry for my poor english :irked:

I think Vieja in general can be bad-ass!
My Vieja Synspillum bugs my 11"Pleco, my 10"oscar and all the SD's!
Quite an attitude on that fish.
She's outgrowing my O at the moment...
No damage on any of the fish, just swimming after them real fast in attack-like swimmoves.

I had one and found it to be very aggressive as well. Mine was very nice looking, but my Trimac ended up taking him out though.

I bought 4 a while back and it all depends on water quality and proper diet for growing them to their potential. I bought mine at an inch they have been putting on about an inch a month, my largest is 4" now. They are a cichlid and pending on individual fish will dictate attitude and compatibility with others. I would recommend getting at least a few and grow them out with your other fish and keep the ones that are gonna work out for you. They are pretty hardy fish but i dont think they would hold up with more aggressive cichlids for too long such as; red devils, trimacs, parachromis and some others, but then again it depends on the individual fish.
I have mine with a butterkoferi and green terrors and he does fine.

I wouldn't compare their growth rate to that of an Oscar, they're definitely not that fast-growing. Mine went from 5" to about 11" in about 1 year.

As far as their aggression goes, it seems to be different for every fish. Some can be extremely aggressive, while others are as laid back as can be.

My Vieja Fenestratas from Rapps has gone from 4" to 10" in 5 months. He is in a 150 gal with 4 Silver Dollars, 1 Pleco, and a shoal of 5 Cory Cats. He is well fed, the tank has excellent filtration and I do 40% water changes once a week. BTW they are considered omnivores, but really like veggies.

Mine has been very aggressive! Not a killer, but a fighter.
I have had to remove a Texas, and a Green Terror and he constantly attachks the Pleco and chews up his tail. He won't let the SD's eat from the top of the tank, when they go up to eat he darts at them and hits them in the side.

I have two that are now close to a foot each. About the same age, 2.5 years old. Both are assumed male, one is hell on wheels and one is quite docile.

So far, more aggressive than synspilum but less aggressive than zonatus.

Mine went from an inch and a half to about 7" in about 14 months.

I tried putting my large male Abalios in the tank with it and others, and my Argentea just started ramming the hell out of it.

Currently I have it in the same tank with a Jag, Escondido, Salvini, Festae, and Loisellei.
