I recently have been interested in Vieja's.

Considering Argentea
fenestratus
bifasciatus
synspilum

Can they all live together or is this a bad idea?

I currently have a stocked 80, but if I was starting this community I'm going to setup a 180 or 240

Conventional wisdom is no, it won't work with Viejas. I think it wmay work if there are no femalees in the tank and you raise them together. I have kept adult Bifa, Maculicauda, and Syn males together with few problems, until a syn started mating with a female Carpinitis which prompted brutal fighting. Once I gave away the female Carpinits (replaced with a male), the fighting stopped. Either way you may get some bad fighting, or you may get lucky and have peace, but mixing sexes almost guaruntees eventual death.

Thx for the info, I had thought they were more peaceful and that a 240 might be enough space for them. I'm glad I asked.

i on the other hand think they would be fine in a 240. with hiding spots so each could claim there own. some of the nicest community tanks on here involved veja species.

In nature you wouldn't normally find these species together in the same spot. I have found over the years it's almost always bad to put 2 adults of the same genus together, be it Vieja or Parachromis or Tomocichla etc.
You're better off keeping multiple tanks with different genus in each. eg Vieja breidori with Parachromis motaguensus with Tomocichla tuba.

This does not assure peace and tranquility, but at least feeding strategies do not conflict(?)

I had been keeping Vieja breidori with xCichlasoma festae, and Parachromis motaguesus for months, but all this went out the window when spawning began. I found long ago, trying to keep the genus Vieja together almost always ended up with overnight death even when the Vieja were not spawning.

i agree with this, a 240 gallon is alot of space and providing lots of hiding spaces this should work fine

I would by several of each type considered all as close to the same size as possible. Put them in the same tank at the same time and cull the females as they show. I have had fair luck with all male tanks, but once a female shows up all bets are off.
