I have recently been getting into Viejas and noticed that there seems to be alot if confusion on vieja ID's on this forum and I am confused with one of my own. Are there alot of hybrids out there like Red Devil / Midas since these species resemble each other and are so closley related? LFS seem to mislabel them an a frequent basis so I could see how there can be alot of hybrids out there.

Yeah thats what im seeing with viejas, they are very hard to ID until they mature and even then there is a little confusion. I have a Zonatus and Fenestratus from Jeff Rapps and I know what they are and they normally look different but when they stress for whatever reason like when I clean the tank they look exactly the same when the colors wash out.

I feel bad for the newbies experiencing problems with the identification of these jewels of the cichlid world. When these fish were first offered in the eighties they were all pure and we were able to distinguish them from two inches to adult. Those images are burned into our memories and we can tell a fake almost everytime. My suggestion to you is get your hands on some old books and start studying. There is alot of fakes out there.
