What's the deal with these fish? I've been interested in vieja however I never hear too much about them, are they rare or just not good fish to keep? Or just other vieja wanted more? I've got 2 but can't seem to find a lot of information on them.... Just wonder why...

There seems to to be some confusion about whether guttalatus and zonatus are 2 different species, or location variants or color morphs of the same species. In 1864 Meek called both Heros guttalatus.
So at this point in time, at least until the confusion is ended, any info on guttalata, "could" be deemed interchangeable with info about zonatus (which there seems to be more of).
At 5"-7" mine looked like photos of typical guttalata, as they grew, at about 9" they seemed to become more and more zonatus-like, back when I had them 10 years ago.

Below is the link to the thread that I opened sometime a go.
You will see a lot of information about Gutts provided by experts including Aqua Mojo and Lee Nuttall and some progress pictures of my Guttulatum.

And below is a picture of my Guttulatum.

nice! male? what size? I have a new specimen myself I'll post it up tomorrow. Mines got excellent coloring so far.

Yes, it is a male about 25 cm. (9''-10''). Should be around 7''-8'' in the picture.
Looking forward to see the pictures of yours.

The more I've read threads and seen contrasting photos the more I think that Gullatus vs Zonatus is tricky. No one variant has a stand out feature from what I can see. Your big guy looks very healthy!

My lighting in these photos is only my white/blue led accent lighting only. I'm not a pro photographer by a long shot. But I find directly running my T5's and so on washes out a lot of the fishes colors. The one photo you can see where the blue is showing a lot on his face. The blue wave's don't carry nearly as deep which is why only the one shot when he's near the top of the tank do you notice it.

My fish is about 7.5 inches or so now. Here comes my photo bomb =)

I loved them both, tons of colors on your gutt.
It is almoust impossible to find a real Trimac in Turkey. The ones we have here are low grade flower horns :(.
