Depending on how old it is I would guess it to be a female. I have a young pair and my female is lighter colored like yours. While my male is much blacker with a good bit more maroon/red on it's neck.

Generally its easiest to tell by color. Males will be more intense with colors and they get large after about 2 (approx) years of age.

Females will be smaller and less colorful. Plus they will eventually lay eggs. Some even take over a year to do so.

If it hasn't laid eggs yet then it would have to be a male. I have never heard of a female not laying or waited laying longer than a year. If you have a shot at pulling it out of the tank check the vent. V is for male and a flabby U is a female! LOL

why would it lay eggs by itself? has no mate. i mean i know some fish have done that but its not normal.

Ha... I um, just googled "do female fish have to lay eggs" and it said not all of them have to lay.... Ever.

Sorry about that. I was under the assumption that ALL females would eventually lay with or without a mate.....

So heres me:screwy:
