Depending on how old it is I would guess it to be a female. I have a young pair and my female is lighter colored like yours. While my male is much blacker with a good bit more maroon/red on it's neck.
If it hasn't laid eggs yet then it would have to be a male. I have never heard of a female not laying or waited laying longer than a year. If you have a shot at pulling it out of the tank check the vent. V is for male and a flabby U is a female! LOL
