So I bought these as redheads. That is a very generic name though. Are they pure synspilas? And are you able to see whether they're males or females? These are three different fish.

Welcome to MFK! Beautiful fish I see some fins getting nipped. Probably due to the LFS in a small tank. These appear to be proper red heads aka vieja synspilum. About how pure they are they look pretty good to me.
Thanks! Awesome! I actually got them from a local guy who kept them with flowerhorns. The flowerhorns were beating on them, so I took them off his hands.
He told me the first one was a male and other two females, but the 2nd fish looks the same as the first fish?.. and the 3rd looks slightly different imo, so that one might be a female?

Don't take anyones word unless they have pictures of the papilla dropped or something. I bought a Male and female midas or so I thought. Took me years to figure out they were both males. Best way is to vent the fish look at the papilla out of the tank.
My Vieja were fine with my flowerhorn they had a pack leader with a hump and he would protect his followers lol
