Scientists now consider synspillum and melanurum one and the same species. Synspillum's color is so variable that it cannot be generatlized, but melanurus in the trade refers to a unique color morph found no where else but one location. I raised both melanurum and synspillum and found that their body marking is identical in juvies. But as they mature, melanurum body is more elongated, shows more uniform orange from head to tail, and at time can turn very dark with mood. In the attached pics, the smaller and more elongated fish is melanurus, and the other is synspillum. Except for the body shape, mine look very similar in color but I've seen synspillum that look very differently.
