Hello All. I'm new to the forum, but not the hobby. I recently purchased this guy from the manager of our LFS. He said it was a Vieja Melanurus (used to be Paratheraps). He said he was a gentle giant, and he has never steered me wrong. He came from the manager's personal stock. Since I put this fish in my 93 gallon cube, he has been completely docile toward the smaller fish (he's 8-9 inches). After exhaustive research, I've come to the conclusion that I'm not nearly smart enough to determine the differences between genus/species/family/etc... Before anyone gets too worried about the size of fish v/s size of tank, rest assured that I realize he could get 14 to 16 inches long. When he outgrows the 93, I intend to put him into the 125. My question is this: Can anyone school me as to exactly what I have and what I should know about it.20161030_125651_015.jpg 20161030_125153_resized.jpg

It looks like a male melanurus to me. The 125g should be fine for him. He is really nice!
Mine is a gental giant too.

Agreed with above Melanura, that's awesome that you got a big, beautiful, gentle giant.

Oh yeah I would be proactive about that, I could be wrong but I don't see lobsters and cichlids as a good mix.

He's nice! At 9" I'd say he's ready for that 125 now. Why don't you put him in there and leave the lobster in the 93?
