I have recently obtained a vieja regani 7-8" not sure of the sex yet. I have it in a 125g. My question is what would be ideal tankmates for it? I was thinking of a few geos

I've never been able to keep any other cichlid with regani in my 150 gal. I had to rescue a dovii because the regani had it pinned in a corner.
Although it hid any time I entered the room, eventually it killed its mate, I gave it to a friend with a larger tank, and it killed his red devil and carpintus, both larger than the regani.
My guess would be a school of swordtails or Astyanax tetras might work.

Lucky you got it big. I have 3 in a 125 that are about 2-3 inches, and they grow VERY SLOOOOOWWWWWW. glacial.
I got him from a friend that housed him in a 150g with a manganese, two peacock bass, a few large plecos and a couple of stingrays. According to him the regani was only aggressive to his stingrays which is why he sold it to me.
