Hello I am interested to see, around what length do Vieja's Generally start to be able to produce fry. In particular im interested in Bifas,Synspilum, black belts and fenne thanks a bunch. And if you know growth rates that would be awesome as well.

Well I recently had Black belts that I purchased at 1 inch and after 2 years they were 8 inches. I would imagine the growth rate for the other is similar. I have had Synspilums before and they grew at the same but they do grow bigger that the Black Belts. The Bifasciatus grow at the same rate as the Synspilums. I currently have Synspilums that are growing well. As far as sexual maturity that I can not answer. But the black belts never paired up.

Thanks smitty for the information, I would have never guessed they grew so slow. What where you feeding them and temperature? 4 inches of growth seems awfully slow for one year.

Thats extremely slow for black belts. Ive seen them reach 12" in a year, if not more in some instances. Just recently a friend had a pair he purchased at 3" and 9 months later he had to re-home them at 12" because of the chaos they were causing in his 125. He kept the temps around 80 and fed them a staple diet of hikari with fresh shrimp several times a week.

8" in 2 years definitely explains how, in your other post about dovii, you were able to keep 4 dovii in a 150g for 2 years. The above mentioned friend and myself had male dovii reach 12" in just under a year.

What water temp/water change/feeding schedules do you have that are promoting such slow growth in what is typically a fast growing species?

yeah blackbelt are usually the fastest growing of the vieja spp. argenteas tend to be the slowest with my arg that is probably about 2yrs old (maybe a little less) only being 7in, most other vieja spp. show growth rates in between these two (though i have only personally kept argentea) but as far as maturity goes, that has more to do with age than size...

I got some synspilum that I got about 3 months ago at 1 inch and they area bout 4 inches now....so they grew 3 inches or more in 3 months feeding on Hikari cichlid bio gold + and crushed up massivore pellets

Thanks for the information, Argentea are true beauties. A rough estimate do you think 6-12 months old or older to be able to breed thanks.

That seems like good progress, then again the food you are providing for them is high i protein.

Thanks, from what you and Peacock ray have said it depends on the food since both of you guys reported feeding them with high protein food.

Also, I was looking at vieja Bifas i forget the rest but anyways i saw (2) color morphs one which was red and the other was not are these the same species? I will post pictures

the color differences are different catch locations. there are more but i've only had experience with two, the "Rio Chacamax, and "Rio Usumacinta". I've actually got a pair from the Usumacinta that just spawned. I made a post if you want to see pics.
