Hey all,
I'm contemplating getting one of these guys for one of my tanks. I'm a bit confused when it comes to it's compatibility while researching this fish on the net....half the places say it's somewhat of a peaceful cichid and can go in a community tank, and others say it's moderately aggressive and can be nasty.
What do you guys think? What can you tell me from your experiences with this beauty!??!?!
Also, what do you think a really colorful specimen about 7-8in costs these days?
Thanks in advance!
John

I have a 9" male and it can be nasty... Other fish could be housed in the same tank if there's sufficient cover

I have one in my 120 (4x2x2) thats about 7 inches with a Chocolate Cichlid, some Tiger Barbs, and Rosy Barbs. He seems to be peaceful towards all the tanks mates, but never shys away from the larger Chocolate.

Mine is in a 180g with other large CA/SA and is one of the more aggressive fish. It does leave my clown loaches, plecos, and rainbowfish alone though. I'm not sure if that's because it's more worried about the other cichlids, or if that is just their nature.

Well I have a 180 with just a pair of rotkeil severums about 5.5-6.5 in, and was planing to keep this guy in there temporarily, until my 500 gallon is setup and he will move there with my peacock bass...what do you think about the temporary housing with the severums? I know they go back a forth mouthing each other and seem like they can hold their own...suggestions?

My syns was timid and skiddish when he was a juvenile, and turned bossy when he became the largest fish in a 75 gal but that's because he didn't have enough personal space. Now that I moved him into a 125 gal, he is totally docile and doesn't bother other fish, often stays motionless at one place. You can see his demeanor in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fe7jsDA-tA8

i had a male kill a female,at 6 inches.if your syn is larger than the sevs,he/she might try to dominate that tank, before you switch.maybe start the syn smaller than the sevs? absolutelyfish in Clifton had some 3-5 inchers last week.they will grow quick enough....

Conspecific aggression is different from aggression towards other fish. A pair or two male in limited tank space can get aggressive to each other, but a single syn can be tolerant of other fish.
