I'm thinking about getting a group of 6-8 juveniles, growing them out and keeping a pair for my soon to be 150g.

I know quite a few people here keep these fish. I'm just curious what their personality is like? I'm drawn to them because of their color.. but I prefer the 'wetpet' personality. Are they shy? skiddish?

Welcome to MFK.
I've kept hem. One of the calmer CA cichlids. Won't start a fight, but can defend themselfs.
Mine had some personality, definately not shy or skiddish, but you can't compare their personality to Oscars or Midas.

I have a 9" male, but have only had him a month or so. He is not shy at all, and not "jumpy". He is definitley not a glassbanger though. I would say that he is calm and interactive.

When I first got him I had him in a 55 for a week or two with a 6" male crenicichla saxatilis and he showed no aggression whatsoever.

I got a juvie a couple of months ago from Jeff Rapps. He is about 6 or 7 inches now. Beautiful fish, nice red head and a line of spangles down the tail. He is very interactive. He will eat crickets, super worms and red worms from my hand. And this is in a community tank with aggressive competitors. He stays out in the open all the time. I will try and send a pic.

Thanks all.

I don't mind so much if they are not a glassbanger. Honestly my Midas/RD drove me insane. Loved his personality as long as it wasn't tank cleaning day. LOL

Sounds like they are what I'm looking for personality wise. Now I just need to find some pure synspilum. I would just order from Jeff but I'm in Canada.

Here are some pictures of mine. He has a few scales missing because he is starting to fight with the big femal Vieja Ufermanni for dominance of the tank. I have also included a picture of my Amphilophous Lyonsi which is very interactive.

I think my Synspilium is a male, I would appreciate any opinions.

Thanks!
