We have all seen beautiful photos of adult fish of this species with amazing color. Most of the adults I have seen posted for sale don't have too much red in the head area. Why is this? Are there different strains of this species, or is it a matter of poor breeding and not selecting for color, or is it a matter of food or maturity of fish?

These are cool looking fish and one of the main attractions for me is the great red color that doesn't appear to be that common in the fish I have seen for sale.

I see Rapps has some listed as very red race...

I would appreciate comments from those experienced in raising/breeding these fish.

Thanks,
Patrick

there are different strains as well as collection locations, and genetics

They are a very variable species. So depending on the genetic background you can get all sorts of colors. I had a female that was VERY red.

Terrible photo but you get the idea.

DSC01785.JPGlocation points and genetics play a big part also the first pic is a wild caught pair(laguna grijavla not sure if i spelled it right) and the secound pic is a female sarstun, will get a pic of my male sarstun he has more yellow in his face than the female.

Thanks Buddha1200.
