Hey
im heading over to Vietnam for a month this wednesday and hoping to convince the family to go and see some fish. well be travelling around the country,so if anyone knows any cool places to see or catch fish id love to know them.
thanks :) pat

There's a massive garden in Saigon (opps, meant Ho Chi Minh City) called Dam Sen that'll be worthwhile visiting.

They have a massive pond that contains huge catfish and others that you can fish in for a fee. There's also display tanks of arapaimas, arowanas etc.

There's also a pond next to a restaurant in there that contains massive giant gourami - some at least 15 to 20 pounds - that you can pick out and they cook it for you. They taste better than the snakehead which we ate there.

To catch snakehead, you have to head out away from the cities into the country areas. Can't remember the name of the region, but it was somewhere west of Saigon, we caught snakehead up to a foot and a half.

if you go ... please take pictures for us :)

Sorry I don't remember the exact name of the town I caught the Sh's in, remember it was about 1.5 hours away to the south west of Saigon in man made ditches and ponds.

If you're in the south, you'll find alot of SH's sold live in the fresh produce markets anyway. They were usually kept by the hundreds in little tubs with just enough water to keep them moist. Tough bastards!

In the lfs I visited, the prices are ridiculously cheap. Asian aros, like everywhere else in the world, are expensive, but things like baby giant gouramy, which sell for close to 100 dollars here, were 25 cents! (Almost ten years ago; haven't been back since)

im home again now, had a great time. beutifull country, nice people and a fish geeks paradise! i didnt get time to go to the garden in Saigon because i was only there for 2 days but thanks anyway Timpon. i went to one street in Hanoi that had about 20 aqaurium shops in it with asian arowanas, all kinds of datnoids and some huge arapimas. one shop had a 1m+ snow white silver aro!! lots of market stalls had live snakeheads and giant gouramis, poor little things were kept in tiny tubs of water or on trays but they where still splashing around. anyway im tired now and got to go back to school tomorow:( so i better be going. i took heaps of pics but my sisters got the camera in Sydney so it might be a while before i can post them up.
