Vinyl tile

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Aside from nearly a third of available vinyl tiles containing lead and or cadmium, many manufacturers use Bisphenol A or formaldehyde as emollients to allow for rolling vinyl during the manufacturing process. Even tiles may contain these chemicals since vinyls are initially made in a wide roll before cutting to size prior to packaging.
If you're sure that the source doesn't include lead or cadmium, you could outgas the vinyl by placing it unstacked in a well-aerated area (better outside) and allow the vinyl to outgas for a couple of months.

It sounds like you are breaking the tank all of the way down. If that's the case, why not use epoxy paint, marine resin, or liquid rubber? What is currently sealing the tank? Sealing already wet plywood doesn't sound fun. Good luck to you.

Thanks Muskie for that link. So the plywood dried (it was a slooooow leak) and the tiles have aired out. I installed the tile and used silicone to both adhere the tiles to the plywood and to seal the seems. I'll do a leak test in a few days to let the silicone completely dry. Hoping for success!! If/when success occurs, I'll look for ways to absorb any "leaching" that may occur. I think I'm good, and I like what that thread sowed with the carbon tossed in for a while. Any other absorption ideas are welcome:-)

IMO- this would have the same con as epoxy- its a brittle setup that won't handle any flexing of the unit.. even if the flexing is microscopic in scope. Something like Sanitred or the liquid rubber would move with the unit and stay sealed.

I hear ya. I'm hoping it will work out. It's now been full of water for a couple days and no water leakage (knock on wood). I'll be sure to keep a sharp eye on it though. I reinforced the tank now that it's on its stand. We'll see how it goes from here:-) Wish me luck. This is my first build and hoping its successful.
