Today, while visiting NY City's Chinatown and having sometime to kill, I've stoped at 2 supermarkets that sell live fish for food. I am always mesmerized by the kinds of oddballs that can be found in such place On this visit I saw the following:

1. Anguilla sp. -- These eels are quite common on the menu. They come in sizes ranging from about a foot to what looks like 2 and a half feet, and at $7.29 per pound, they are quite inexpensive. Given the per pound price, I wonder hwo much would each fish cost?
2. Jade Sleeper Gobies -- these things were absolutely massive. At about 12-14" in lenght thie girth was just scary! I knew that they get fat but never thought they'd be as thick as my thigh
3. Saw a bunch of fish that were a perch of some sort. Very strange looking. Almost like a cross between a swordspine snook and a datnoid. I wonder what they were and whether fresh or salt water species?
4. Frogs -- I saw a basket full of live frogs! Probably the biggest frogs EVAR! They must have been good 10" accross and a beautiful shade of deep green. And yes, ther eis no doubt that they are intended as food

So... You can probably guess what I'm thinking :naughty: Has anyone ever purchased live fish from a supermarket to be kept as pet? Got some tips for doing so? Do I just go there with a bucket and ask them to put the fish in there? What about weighting it on a scale? Can it be done without taking fish out of the water?

when i was a kid, i'd buy live clarias catfish and striata snakeheads in the wet marketplace to keep in my tanks. i'd tell the lady fishmonger not to smack the fish in the head 'cos i was gonna keep it alive in my tank. lol

No puffers?

Were the perch perhaps barramundi (Lates calcifer)?

They are not barramundi, scale pattern is different. There are no live puffers. In terms of freshwater fish, there are several different carp (buffalo and bighead), hybrid striped bass, catfish, and tilapia. I had a small tilapia bought from a fish market that lived for a while when I was a kid. I think you're exaggerating a bit as well. No fish at 12 inches would be the thickness of your thigh unless you are an anorexic teen girl. The frogs, Bufo sp. are not as large as you make them seem either. That 10 inch measurement is generous and they may not be that large even when totally stretched out and measured from the tips of claws.

Don't mess with the NY native. ;-)

Aren't Bufos toads? I thought they were toxic?
