So first off let me say I have no experience in raising cool fish, so please feel free to comment on what my plans are, especially if it seems stupid.
Second, my goal with getting into fish raising is to basically get one cichlid that I know will grow up to a fairly large size and has no problem being a solitary fish (preferably one where I will be able to watch it grow over years). I'm thinking Oscar right now but don't really need to make the decision until I move in June. But basically I want one fish that will have a 55-80G tank to itself to become king of it's domain, maybe throw in some silverdollars or something after time if I want tank mates, but I really want a cool looking cichlid that will get to at least 10 inches.
Anyway here's where I'm at in terms of supplies I plan on getting once I move out.
55G-80G rectangular tank
Rena Filstar Canister XP3 (hopefully with a bigger canister I won't need a HOB)
JBJ heater (heater's are necessary with cichlids right?)
Black sand on the bottom, maybe a few rocks and driftwood to give it some shelter.
Test kit for water
Coralife T5 light (to fit tank)
Anyway, it's kinda a long way off till June but I figure no harm in getting the ideas rolling and becoming familiar with all the terminology and dif. practices involved.
