Dont use Chemicals.

A properly maintained tank should not need any help from Chemicals.
If you are having problems with ammonia, your tank is either not cycled all the way, overstocked or underfilterd/undermaintained.

So proper filtration, weekly water changes and proper stocking levels will take care of any ammonia.

As for PH, unless you have fish like Discus that are sensitive to that sort of thing, PH is really not something you need to mess with.
As long as PH is Consistant and does NOT fluctuate, then your fish will be fine. Most fish can thrive in a range from 6-8. As long as the level stays the same.

Lowering and raising the PH can actually be harmful.

Right, i forgot to mension that Tap water conditioner is good stuff to use.

If you have chlorine or chloramines in your tap, you'll want a conditioner that neutralizes it.

Other than that, no chemicals should be needed to treat your water

Keep up with your waterchanges and you wont need to use chemicals;)

hmm, interesting observation. I've never heard of that one. Cycle contains the wrong kind of bacteria, so they will die off leading to ammonia. Perhaps that's what your plants are responding to. Ammonia is the preferred form of nitrogen uptaken by plants.

I also only use Prime as the only thing I add to my tanks on a regular basis. Oh, yeah, and plant fertilizers :) But if you don't have live plants, a good tap water conditioner is all you need long-term. That, with regular (hopefully at least once weekly) water changes, are all you really need for healthy fish.

You know i have great luck with stress coat. Although it's NOT A CHEMICAL i still supliment with it and the fish seem to love it. its a aloe based declor that helps with the slime coat of the fish. It helps maintain their slime-coat while keeping them destressed which is in my opinion a good thing!
