Hi there.

I have a histrix, and soon i will reccive a wild cought female leopoldi (p13).

I feed the histrix earthworms, shrimp, raw coalfish, mussels and mysis, but recently i have been reading about ppl who say that "you need to give your rays additional vitimins"... it have made me wonder.. And i have done a lot of searching on this topic, lately... without relly getting anywhere...

If thiaminase is so dangourus to predatory fishes, sutch as stingrays, how the * do they survive in the wild? I understand that rays feed alot on different types of crustations and mollusks in the wild... and that "fish" generally is only a smaller part of the diet to most rays (am i wrong?). So culd these problems ppl are talking about, with captiv specimens, be due to the AMOUNT of fish meat we are offering them? In that case; culd the solution be to just cut down on the fish supplies, and feed more crustations etc?

... or do we still have to offer additional vitamins?? One thing i do know - in the wild, humans are not swimming around, injecting vitamins into ray-foods..

More questions to come. I am having a hard time writing in English, took me 30 minutes to write this. So need a break :)

Your English is very good. My compliments!

When it comes to nutrition, diversity is the best. Having a diverse diet or a strict, highly processed commercial diet will give your rays the nutrition they need. Injections should be left to the professionals. Injections are a last resort when trying to salvage a very ill specimen. Repeated, routine injections for the sake of nutrition can cause their own harm as well.

Focus on diversity of diet or find a very well developed commercial diet that you can supplement with diverse treats like raw foods.

Respectfully,
FireMedic.

I meant injecting into food, like earthworms, shrimps, etc. Not to pierce the ray. "God" forbid me :)

Thank you for advice. I think i will keep on feeding, like i do now, and continue my search for one of those hikari foods. Hardt to find around here..

If you have a well rounded diet, additions aren't something to worry about too much.

For the sake of all those reading, would you mind describing a "well rounded" diet specific to potamotrygon rays?
