I was thinking of sticking empty bottles of absolut in to make a background on my tank and maybe a few crystal head bottles in just for decorations has anybody done anything like this is it safe for the fish ????

It's fine, just make sure they have been washed well. A dip in some boiling water to sterilize it wouldn't hurt either.
