I'm considering getting a vortex diatom filter and I was wondering if anyone here has used this filter.

Do they make your tank super clear or is that not true ?

Input apprieciated

Thanks

It is a very good filter for occasional use. The setup and getting it going takes a little while. The filter requires the diatom powder and it should be ran in a bucket first before putting it on the tank. You just have to connect the inlet and outlet together and bring it to the tank. It will clog very easily and slow down. You will have to reconnect the inlet and outlet before turning it off and shaking it. Restarting will allow it to clear up in the jar before you should put it in the tank again. It will filter out even green algae water. It does make the water crystal clear but it does take a little bit of time to get it started.

Just like any filter there are pros and cons...

Pros: will mechanically filter your water EXTREMELY well.

Cons: Requires the powder, clogs easily, must be regularly mantainanced.

If you don't mind a little work, they work well for water polishing. Personally, I like UVs after some good mechanical filtration, as they are much lower mantinance. Purigen is another good product you could look into, but it will need to be recharged at some point.

Probably the best polisher around but kind of a pain to use. Definitely nice to have one laying around.
