I've been debating on buying a diatom filter for a while since my water has had a green tint to it. Well this morning I get up and a couple of my rainbowfish look like they are starting to break out in ich. I keep the water at 80 so I was a little surprised as ich doesn't usually outbreak in warmer temps.

Anyway, I went ahead and ordered the Vortex XL this morning. It should be in next week. I know it will get rid of the floating ich but what about the white spots on the fish, how does it help with that?

If memory serves me the ich on the fish is very short lived and falls off when it dies. By using a diatom you are removing eggs before they hatch and attach to the fish or something along those lines. In all the years I've kept fish I've never had to deal with ich so I've never had to BBC look intobit to closely.

I'm not 100% sure that it's ich. Only two fish have spots. One fish has one spot and another has 3 or 4. They have been like that since yesterday and there has been absolutely no change to them or any other fish. I would have thought the clown loaches would have caught it. I'm still getting the filter though. I plan on running it for a few hours every other week or so.

Ich can break out at 80F. Treat your tank with salt and raise the temp to 85-86F. When the spots disappear, continue treatment for another week to rid the tank of newly hatched cysts. A gravel wash/waterchange before treatment will do wonders in reducing the pathogen's population.

Whst kind of substrate do you have? Ive seen sand stick to fish that resembles ich.
