Hello,

I just bought Vortex XL filter and I have two questions:

1. If I will use filter for 2 hours every day (automatic time schedule) is this will be OK ? If not, what you recommended ?
2. In average, how often we have to clean the filter ?

Thanks !

You won't have a problem using the filter for 2 hours a day.

How often you have to clean the filter depends on how dirty your tank is and how fast the pleated filter clogs. The only real concern would be when the filter shuts off the diatoms will fall to the bottom of the jar and when it goes back on, they won't be evenly distributed on the pleats.

Well... that can be a problem if I want to use this filter every day for 2hours...

About cleaning... I mean in general, how often on average you need to clean it, assuming that it serves only to improve the transparency of water and not to clean it of algae and other dirt stuff.

Thanks !

The problem your going to encounter is that diatom filters, filter down to diatom size particles. So with normal operation, which is on until it clogs, would be about 2-3 days unless your tank is pretty much crystal clear. They are only designed to polish the water, that's why they are used as pool filters.

I ran mine 24hrs a day for several months. How dirty your water is will dictate how often you clean it. There's no real answer here. That's like asking how often would I need to put gas in my car. I would clean when I could see a noticeable reduction in the outflow. Keep it oiled, don't let it get clogged, and it can run all day without any problems.

It is working now, but I have some other questions...

- it is little too noisy... how about yours ?
- even in inside the gar is no air, every couple minutes I see that air comes up from the filter
- the motor is very hot
- when I turn off, wait 5 minutes and turn on, for first couple seconds I have cloudy water.

Thanks for helping !

it sounds like a little turbine when it runs, yours is also new so it could be alittle louder and quiets down as it breaks in and yes it does get pretty hot but thats normal.

when you turn it off and let it sit for 5 minutes it allows for some powder to fall from the pleated filter bag and when turned back on its pushed through into the tank and then clears as its filtered out and clings back to the bag

-The noise its normal.
-The air its normal.
-The hot motor its normal.

-The cloudy water its normal, that happens because when you turnoff the filter, some diatom powder falls from the bag, thats why every time I restart it I use a small bucket inside the tank. Its very annoying :irked:
