I saw a brief mention on our local news that a group of vultures feeding on a deer carcass on a roadside was causing slowed traffic due to the drivers slowing and watching them. There was a short clip of footage and the vultures were mostly black and they looked like large ravens.I thought it was interesting as I'd never heard of vultures living in this area...If anyone can find and share the news link that would be great.

Ur in PA. Dude vultures are everywhere here....

We have Black Vultures and Turkey Vultures here in PA. Black Vultures are less common and don't have the ability to locate food with their nose so they use their eyes to spot food or they look for circling Turkey Vultures (which have one of the greatest noses on earth). If you see vultures flying and they have gold tips under their wing feathers, those are Black Vultures. Turkey's have basically a sold wing color.

I never knew they were called vultures. We (people in my area) call them buzzards.

That's a slang term for them. True Buzzards (Buteo) are a genus of Hawk. In Europe/Asia they call them Buzzards but here in the US we call them Hawks such as the familiar Red-tailed Hawk.

I know that now but I've never seen any before and I've never heard of any being near the city.

They're everywhere in the US, though in some areas you may be used to seeing hawks more than them, especially when it's still as cold as it's been lately.

Here's your link, though: http://abclocal.go.com/wpvi/story?section=resources/traffic&id=8058547

for some reason I figured them to be more toward the western part of the country. Thanks for the news link.;)

There are plenty of vultures here in PA. They're great for cleaning up the various animals that have been killed by cars or eating the remains of various pest animals such as raccoons and groundhogs.
For a Philly guy,it's a big enough deal to see a hawk and now this.I hope to be able to see one up close one of these days.
