i would do a 50 percent wc with the ro unit was the tank seeded off good before the fish was put in it? also how many fish are in it and the size of the tank?

Buy a reverse osmosis filter and just get your ro water at home

That's a cool option, never seen that before. But it says it only does 25-125 gallons per filter cartridge, the cartridges are around $20 a piece. That could get very expensive very quickly.

I got a 4 stage ro filter system from my lfs for $180, the filters in it have so far lasted close to 1500 gallons and still have a lot of life in them. It costs about 50 for all new filters on the rare occasion they're needed.

Yeah it could get pricy. Could you send me the name of the filter you use?

Where is your tap water coming from? I'd be pretty concerned if the water I was drinking had detectable ammonia in it, especially if it was coming from a town supply.

Forget about buying RO filters for now, the first thing to do is make sure it isn't your test kit. Take a sample to the LFS and have them test it to make sure. If it does have ammonia in it then you need to figure out why, if you're on town supply then contact the authorities or if you're on rain or bore water check your source (dead bird in the water tank?). In the mean time keep using the RO water for your tank (watch the pH) until you figure out how to get clean tap water.
