My absolute no to trying to get my pond plans going further is a matter of cooling.

So, aside from having pond sized surface area to exchange heat (pro and cons of that) I was wondering if the W/D system (2 55gallons drums) aid in cooling through evaporation.

Sure would help. The key is to push/pull fresh (non water saturated air) through the wet/dry media. The is exactly what Industrial Cooling Towers do. The dryer the air (lower humidity) the more evaporation you will get and the more cooling. If this is inside, you will have moisture problems...

To do this you would want to put a small blower on your system to push fresh air through.

I agree.^

You can even hook the blower up to a thermostat so that it turns on when the water reaches a given temperature. Also, you want the blower to force air INTO the filters, I've rusted out blowers by pulling wet air through them.

top off is going to be a pain my friend....but it should cool it

Water is a whole lot cheaper then electricity.

true...but I would need to have a drip on a system like that or I would lose my mind
