W/D Filter Care?

are your prefilters plugging quickly?
If you're getting a lot of crap on the bottom, your prefilters may be plugging prematurely and not allow the water to flow through the biochamber efficiently, creating a lack of biological filtration.

The tank has been running for 5 months. Does this sound like to short of a time for the sump to have some sludge/debris? How often should the sump be serviced?

:iagree: five months is a short time interval for a sump or wet/dry. Umm...which do you have? Or do you have both? A wet/dry should not need cleaning if you have bio-balls. A well sized sump should be big enough to act as a septic tank and allow for the entire break down of the fish waste. There are solids that will not break down so cleaning is inevitable. The period between cleanings is dependent on the fish waste load.

Another thing is to never clean all of the media at the same time. When you clean it, you lose your bacteria.
