W/D Piping Configuration

hello all, had some quick questions on the pvc running for my w/d

1) should the threaded ball valve go directly onto the mag pump? or should there be some length of pvc in between?

2) from the ball valve to the rest of the piping - is it just an adapter and then glue on the pvc?

3) the setup is currently running 4 return pumps - 2 rio 3100, and 2 rio 2500 - i am planning on replacing all 4 with the mag18 --- the w/d is fed by a single overflow - will the mag18 be more than enough to do what those 4 smaller pumps are doing right now? rated gph wise, it doesn't seem like enough, but the mag18 seems to be doing fine for plenty of other folks with more than that this?

EDIT/ADDITIONAL QUESTION:

steve89's setup has inspired me yet again....this time, with those side drilled overflows down to the sump....

so....unfortunately, more questions:

1) currently, tank has a center overflow chamber - how hard are these to remove usually? is it just siliconed in or something more elaborate?

2) with side hole drilled overflow - i just need to make sure i drill at a height where in case the pump fails, there will be no flood out of the sump right?

3) how easy is it to drill acrylic? the tank is approx 1" acrylic

main reason being, i want more swimming room for the fish....and a center overflow is kind of prohibitive to some aquascaping ideas.....
