has anyone tried making one (wet/dry filter) out of a large clay pot or water pitcher? I'm trying to get ideas for a friends pond but there is nowhere to hide his filter so making one out of a plastic 5gal bucket is out of the question, it has to look decorative.
Please post pix of what you have wether you made it or bought it. If its something other than clay pot thats ok I just need some ideas. thanks.

Ok thanks, another question why do all these filters feed the dirty water in through the bottom and overflow out the top? I thought the whole idea of a wet/dry trickle filter was to have the dirty water drip onto a drip plate of some sort, through the bio area and into the sump on the bottom where the pump would return it to the tank.
Becouse my friends pond has about a 10" ledge on the wall I was thinking about placing the pump in the pond but having it enter the filter at the top and free flowing out the bottom, really either one would work for me cuz I planned on tapping the pot with a water spickett where the water could flow through back to the pond. I guess it would work just as well on the top of the pot as it would on the bottom. see the drawing for an idea of what the pond I'm working with is like. the red line would be the water tube leading into the filter while the blue arrow indicates the clean water free flowing out back to the pond.
So I guess my question is, is one filter more effective than the other? (having the water enter throught the top or bottom).
I had searched the site for pix of peoples homemade filters but didnt come up with any. thanks again.

??? Thanks frasertheking some how that filter link didn't show up in my post (makes my post look really confusing ).
viperman100, biggest difference is in cleaning, I prefer a top down feed, in which the pre-filter is on top and easily accessible (you don't have to tear
down the whole filter to clean it). Some bottom feeds allow a backwash to go in the pond if power goes out.
