Ok, I'm retarded.. probably.. I've raised aros to 24"+, 26" Channa, 17" Dat, 18" endlies, 24" Fire eel, 24" TSN.. I'm not saying this is big but I can say I'm pretty good at keeping my fish alive and growing..

so, my question is.. Where are all these 18-24" florida/spotted I hear so much about? I would like to see some not pond, but aquarium raised 18-24" gars capable of outgrowing silver aros (2 threads going on as I write states that their silver aro will be in danger because of these monster florida gars).. I may just be a bit grumpy since I never seems to be able to keep this effin spiecies alive but I state 2 things.

1. they max out at 16".

2. they grow slowly (I'm talking almost dat slow).

now prove me wrong with some tasty gar pics and inspire me to make the drive to the northern parts of sweden where the polar bears still roam free and the vikings rule the land to pick up 2 decent sized gars. I want them but I need some inspiration.

Check out Maddings tank. He wiped me out of most of my gars including a approx. 20" Florida which I grew from 10".

Wild ones do get up to about 2 feet, I see them all the time, I would like to see a large one in a tank as well though.

My biggest Florida hit 18" and has pretty much stopped growing except for girth, as far as I can tell. Then again, he's in a standard 125g tank. He'll be moving into a 220g (72x30) tank in the next couple of months, so we'll see if he hits another growth spurt once he's in there.

i agree with the OP i have one at 12-13inches got him at 8 he is going very well in a 240 long i have seen some flordias at 3 feet but that was at underwater aquarium at the Mall of America's 1.2million gallon tank lol

lets see some monster pics!!! bump bump

1' + the first year.. then slow down from everything I've researched and experianced in the past year I've had my Gars. I don't doubt 20"+ But I haven't seen many confirmed in tank.

I've got a 21inch florida but it's nothing to brag about

Yes ive seen a spotted gar much larger than 20 inches while gigging fish in the bootheel of Missouri when I was about 12 ( I remember it so well because it looked so different from the Longnose and shortnose that are common in Southwestern Mo. I would guess it was between 26 and 30 inches). I admit I have never seen a Spotted that big in a aquarium. Gar live longer and grow slower than Arrowana or Snakeheads naturally.
