walmart tank and setup

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
They are usually barely adaquate, but if you are keeping large, messy fish, then you want to at least double the "adaquate" filtration. The equipment they include with their tank kits is the cheap stuff, so it's adaquate, but not much more than that, and not what I'd call Good stuff. For just starting out, it might not be bad, but know that there's better, more efficient stuff out there. And it awful to lose your first fish to a filter breaking down or your heater going haywire and either cooking your fish or allowing them to get too cold.

What size tank were you looking at getting? We'll help you out with the filtration etc.

By the way, Welcome! Another MN guy.

I started out with a walmart AquaCulture kit. The kits come with a Tetra Whisper HOB filter. I used the filter for a few months and was disgusted with the performance of it, especially with such a light fish load. I replaced it with a bio-wheel, which I am a personal fan of, but to each his own :)

The kit isnt a bad deal if you want to get the hood and tank at the same time, otherwise, you are better off buying the tank, hood, heater, filter, etc... seperate.

I guess bottom line is that those whispers really do a crappy job unless you plan on having a goldfish.

Just my $.02...... Good luck- welcome to MFK! :grinno:

Oh and btw... Think about supporting a LFS or warehouse instead of funneling money into walmart;)

55 gal cold water, 60-65 deg. started with 4 fish 4 in long. 2 rubbed heads almost through to brain than started with what looked like ick. let sit for 2 weeks. Then was stupid added way too many fish. SHOCK. killed most 3 weeks later. Now I have 5 4in long on avg. and 1pleco. I have been battling ick with green med. fish wont eat. I removed charcoal filter added some lps salt, ich meds , and some other med says helps develop their slime and heel. water is now cloudy without the filters. sponge is still in the filter and pumping just removed the charcoal bag. and 1 6 in air stone. I have no water test kit yet.
sorry for the long ramble in a hurry at work.

If your just starting out I think a 55 gallon tank is a great way to start.(get use to the waterchages water parameters feeding habits etc.) But before you purchase I think you should look at the newspaper ad’s visit a few yard sales. With a little bit of investigating I think you can find a good deal. I was looking for a Q tank about a mouth ago but decided to wait. Next thing you know I run into a yard sale and there was a 55 gallon & stand and heater ( and a lot more juck --2 pumps, yellow gravel, some meds,) for 45 dollars. Good condition. The guy said he could not keep his fish alive for more then a mouth. If you wait you can find a good setup for a low price. Keep your eyes open and check in the buy or sell category.

the filters like the whisper 30/60 arent bad you just need to replace the media with something better, for instance the carbon filters are crap so replace that with something that will hold more of a bioload

I would not even bother with Wal-Mart. I was in a PetCo and once again, the Sales they had on some tanks was out of this world. A marineland 75 with stand, on Sale $125.00.:WHOA:
