Walstad method...with kitty litter?!

well she did fail to mention the 1000 water changes she had to do, to even get the water clean enough to see though. I have see people use potting soil for planted tanks before. the is a load of chems. and other crap in it that require loads of 90% water changes. Soils work well for plant but with no filter constant water changes are a must. There is no way I would ever put litter in an aquarium, those are vary toxic chems.

I've only seen very high-tech, advanced tanks using kitty litter.

I don't use potting soil for my planted tanks, I just use top soil. Just plain dirt.

Dirt from arid settings or closer to wooded areas? I wouldn't mind trying good ol' dirt. I just don't want to goof too badly trying it.I know to avoid excessively woody soil and to avoid contaminants like pesticide and waste. But should I grab a bunch of what blows in the wind or dig a little and get some of that clay-like stuff from the forest?

Regular kitty litter is clay base & I have herd it works? Imagine rinsing it good prior would help.
A new plant display I used 20 lbs of Red seas plant grave which was red clay base that needed rinsed well then added regular natural gravel on top. Works pretty good for me.

I have used regular outside dirt before with success. I use peat so I'm not sure if the soil tans the water also.

Just recently i bought some Miracle-Grow Organic Choice Potting Mix and so far It's working [no fish in that tank yet] but i would suggest at least 2 inches of regular gravel on top.
During my initial planting i only had about 1 inch of ECO-complete on top and the potting soil made more of a mess out of my tank, than the dirt.

I would recommend regular dirt from your backyard [sifted]
