so i am wanting to build a sump for my aquarium. I am wondering though if there is a way to equalize the output flow with the flow going into the sump o matter what setting i have the pump at if u get me? As in as water is pushed into the tank by the pump an equal amount falls down into the sump, no matter what the flow rate of the pump is set at? If this makes sense any help or advise would be appreciated.

Just make sure you either make an overflow, buy an overflow, or drill the tank so it's capable of flowing more than your pump. As long as the overflow is built and sized correctly, it will never flow more water than what your pump can return.

how do I build an overflow? I cannot drill the tank because it is full of fish, water, sand, and a tree haha

There are a few threads about how to make an overflow. Just search for "DIY overflow". You can make it and stick it right in the tank.

The overflow is just that...as the pump puts more water in the tank from the sump, water 'overflows' back into the sump.

The above link should give you everything that you need.

FYI...Rule of thumb on sump size is 1/3 of tank size for heavy stocking and 1/4 for normal stocking.

Any questions...You know where we are :D
