I am going to nashville in a couple weeks and I will probably run by a LFS on the way back. It is a 5-6 hour trip home. If a bought a fish... how would I insure I get back home with it still being alive? I mean I know they ship fish overnight all the time, so should I just get a normal bag, stick it in a cooler to keep the temperature constant, and thats it?

I taken fish from Florida to Oklahoma before so its not that hard. If you can bring a bucket that has a lid preferably but not necessary. Try to get an air pump that either runs off of battery or get an AC adaptor for you car. Buy your fish, put it in the bucket an off you go. The bigger the fish the bigger the bucket. Turn the air pump on and away you go. When I did my long trip I didn't have an air pump in the car only when we stopped at the hotel and all the fish made it.

In order to run a basic air pump on your cars battery, you need an AC/DC inverter, not an AC adapter. This method is best, especially for long trips, as you can plug in heaters or filters as well. I use a 5 gallon bucket or a cooler depending on the size of the fish.

I think all the talk about pumps and buckets is a litle overkill, unless you are talking about fish that are 12 inches or bigger. For smaller fish, just ask the lfs to use a larger bag than they normally would with lots of oxygen. The pure oxygen in the bag should maintain the oxygen level in the water even better than an air pump in a bucket would.

this is what I was hoping to hear for a 5-6 hour trip honestly. lol
