I'm probably gonna buy a parachromis friedrichsthalii very soon and I want one that has great colors. Idk if a male or a female has better colors and which one is more aggressive (I'm gonna guess male) but if anyone could help me out I'd appreciate it. Thanks

IMO with Friedrichsthalis, the females look better. I like the solid yellow with black stripes instead of the male that looks like a yellow male motaguensis. Yeah i'd say male is the most aggressive, but during breeding all of my parachromis females are the bullies. Good fish though.

Eye of the beholder....depends on what you consider "better" means to color. Both sexes are equally aggressive.

Here's a male p. fredrichsthali from Honduras:

I'm sure if you ask Mo really, really nicely, he would just send you his Freddies for free! And if he does, I have my own list of his fish that I will ask really nicely for :grinno:.

I've got a single freddy about 5" which I was told non-authoritatively was a male at the LFS. Seeing Aquamojo's (awesome) photos makes me wonder. It's color and marking vary depending on mood, when it's riled up it looks almost exactly like the first "female" photo up there, in fact with even crisper vertical bars.

When it's not colored up it does look much like the "male" photos, less blue. There aren't any other freddies in the tank. Any comment on how to definitively tell the sex of this fish?

Also, I'd like to breed him/her, so /i'd also like to hear any recs for mail order freddies, there aren't any in the stores in my town right now.

I just bought 4 about a month ago, I ordered them from tangledupincichlids, at the 3-3.5 inch size. They are the "La Cieba" variety from Honduras. They are in a 55. It didn't take long for a pair to form, maybe a week. Then they tried to eliminate the other two. One I saved, he is getting better. The other got killed. Pretty much the exact same thing happened in 2009, I bought 4 from the ACA convention about the same size, maybe even smaller. Those also paired off fast and eliminated the others. They bred quickly, and so did my new pair. Unfortunately the female of my older pair jumped out of the heated hole on the aquarium cover.

I really missed that pair, glad to have a new pair. In my experience, these breed as readily and as young as convicts. I have a 29 set up and running to put some fry in, I just needed a heater for it, which I bought tonight after work.

Wow, my older pair looked a lot greener, even though they were aso sold to me as "La Ceiba". Looks like a different variety to me now that I see these pics together.

their nice thanks for sharing the pics and i was thinking about getting a breeding pair or i might see if i can get it to mate with one of fish now
