Picked up a used tank this weekend. Guy advertised a 150 for $100 on craigslist. Turned out to only be a 125. Dirty as he!!, but in good condition. Talked the guy down to $75 and he also threw in 4 emperor 280 filter in great condition and some misc crap. Was gonna sell tank but after I cleaned it I got that "MINE" mentality.

I was planning on getting a 225 this spring to house central americans. Don't have much experience with them, I've mostly kept SA and currently started Africans. Was wondering if I could start a CA tank with 125 and upgrade in few months to larger tank. The fish I want to house are:

Black Belt
Jag
Flowerhorn
Texas
Red Festae
Veija synspila

Anybody tried this combo with success. I will most likely get them at 1 or 2 inches and feed twice a day. So I doubt they'll outgrow a 125 in a few months.

Flowerhorn isn't central, its a hybrid, and that would be my main concern because they're overly aggressive. Id worry abt the black belt and the syn too. Buy them all as juvi's, goodluck!

Yeah, may not do a Flowerhorn. Don't usually like getting fish everyone else has, but I always figured you have to have or have had a flowerhorn to be part of the monster cichlid keepers. Saw another thread and they had a paratalapia. May try that. I also may wait until I get the upgrade until I get the black belt and veija synsplia. I like the green terrors but everyone has them. Currently looking for something that could take its place with similar or better colors.

I don't think having kept a flowerhorn is a prerequisite for being a monster fish keeper.

Green terrors are awesome fish to keep.

You should really be trying to keep fish that you are interested in keeping.

Most are keeping the Gold Saum. If you want to be different get a real GT from a vendor/breeder. I think that Rapps actually may have them in stock right now.:headbang2

If wanting to do central though, neither the paratalapia or green terror would fit. Nor does the festae.

I know its hard to tell, especially on internet, but I didn't mean that literally. I felt I was a monster fish keeper once I started my DDT (dangerous discus tank). Seriously, I do like Flowerhorns, just never kept fish that big and mean before. I'm looking to start. I may however do a single Flowerhorn in a Fity5. My addiction has lead me to want to try to have/learn almost every type of fish. CA's is next up in line. I do however try not to waste fish. That's why I'm trying to carefully plan this setup.

Darth Pike, you taught me something today. Always saw GTs in CA setups, I always assumed they were CA even though I knew blue acaras were south american. This tank doesn't have to be 100% CA, I was prob gonna try to put a fire eel in there anyway.

Yeah, most seem to think festae are CA too due to the amount of mixing too. But alas both are deffinately SA. Oddly though, there is one species of blue acara that is CA. (found in costa rica and panama)

you have nothing to worry about with the black belt, i had one with my texas and my texas beat the **** out of him.... black belts arent that aggressive. beleive it or not the most aggressive one in your list besides the flowerhorn would be the texas... cause they can get along fine with tankmates but if threaten they do go bannanas
