want a payara

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I don't know much about them other than that they stay smaller than the other species, and that they can be pretty skittish.

Yeah.
hahaha.
Been outta the game for too long, gettin' stupid.

I've seen people keep them for four years max.
They'd be good for a 4x2' I think.

Over the past 2 years I've seen wave after wave of new posters who bought a Tat only to come back 2 weeks later to report it's death. I suspect that stress caused by transport was the cause. Payara don't handle stress well and it leads to fatal diseases. Could be poor food quality, tempature, lack of nessassary levels of dissolved oxygen, lack of circulation accumulating harmful gas, not enuff water to shed the gas - take your pick and list could easily be made larger.

All these issues continue into the home aquaria as well. The demands of Payara exceed those of cichlids and other common wet pets when it comes to overall water quality. IMO there is no such thing as a beginner Payara. All 3 have their own advantages and disadvantages. For me it was trial and error, listening to others here on MFK has been invaluable especially their set ups, maintence, and acclimation routines. Best to get ones head around thier needs first.

As a side note: I seriously doudt that my healthy Scomb will just drop dead 4 mo. from now when it reaches 2 years old.

One other side note: Alot of 4'x2' tanks do not have tempered glass bottoms -be aware.

I would go with a scomb.

In reality, most payara keepers cannot or do not keep payara until their natural death. Tats seem to be kind of touchy and many times like to hide. Mine hides a lot, and he also chases around any fish that swim and tries to bite at them. But then if anything chases him, there is a good chance the stress could kill him.
