hi guys.
currently i have a rekord 120. its fitration is a column in the back right corner of the tank which houses 4 sponges, carbon one, 2 blue ones and a green one. it uses a 400l per hour powerhead to pass the water thru the sponges, i have seen 1500l per hour pumps on ebay. should i get a new pump or invest the same amount of money about £50 on an external filter.

thanks

I don't think your turn over rate is high enough with what you have now. You want the turnover rate to be at least 4 times what you have now. I.E. ..... if you have a 120 gallon, a flow rate of 500 gallons per hour (or more) would be great. I don't think you will find a powerhead that flows this much? So........ i would recommend another filter and keep what you have going.

you do not need to up the pump size. Personally I would get a small canister to put on it, such as a Rena Filstar XP1 (or 2, depending on how much overkill you want). I have a lone XP1 on a 29 bowfront and it filters excellently.

The 1500L pump will give you a 10X (+) turnover rate which is very seldom required unless you have something sensitive like a Discus. you could do well with a 750-1000LPH.

You might want to think about the rate at which water flows through the column. If your pump puts it on the top faster than it flows through, you'll have some spillage and a mess on your hands.

First off your weakest point by far is that it is a juwel tank and the powerheads are the weakest link, they stop working when ever they feel like it and you can only get another one from juwel which will break again. I'm sure the 1500l powerhead won't fit that tank anyway which is a good thing as it will break, my smallest tank is a rio 125 and my other tanks heads won't fit it so I'm fairly sure the big one won't fit yours.

Sorry, just read that back and it sound's like I'm bashing your tank and Juwel, this is not the case I have 3 juwel tanks and can't fault them apart from the powerheads.

Sorry if I went a bit over the top there but I've just had to shell out for yet another one, to sum up go for the canister;)

Cheers man i aint have any real prob with the tank, if you are having so many problems with the powerhead in the filter, y not take the jewul filter box completly out of the tank and invest in a external or else i good internal filter. the box is only held on by a few blobs of silicone. i have read that people have taken this unit out of the tank with no probs. that is wat i will do if i start to have porblems with the filtration system.

oh an this tank is my first so it aint all bad. but most tanks i see are juwel, can you suggest a decent make???

I can't fault the tanks at all apart from the powerheads, I would get another but the diy threads have convinced me to build my own in the future. I have 3, the 400 a 240 and a 125 all rio. All the tanks are over filtered with a large canister on them as well as the internal(apart from the 125, but will be adding one to this as well in the future). The range has been upgraded a fair bit since I got mine, our 125 is fairly new and has the updated T5 lighting rig that the other don't have and I've not had a problem with that power head(yet;)). Plus I can get them at about 15%-20% less than most web deals which helps

If it makes you feel better our first tank was a rekford 60;)
