Okay, havent been on here in a while but here goes. I have a 75 gallon with 4 adult tiger oscars, the smallest is 8 inches. Now, I dont wanna hear "you need a bigger tank" blah blah blah....They've been this size for the last 2 years with no problems so...heh. Anyways...I have a Marineland Magnum 350 and a powerhead in the tank right now. I want to take some of the stress off of the Magnum. I was thinking about getting another one because Im more than pleased with it, but, Is there another filter out there that's as good, or even better for around the same $$$? Let me know. Thanks.

What you are looking for:

Magnums are okay filters, but aren'tt he best. They are quite inexpensive though which is definitely a point in their favor. Other filters such as the XP3 are generally considered a slight upgrade, but you will pay a little bit mroe for it. Eheim canisters are regarded as 'the best' in canister filters, but you will pay a lot mroe for their quality.

Personally, I really like using the same brand/style/size filters which makes media as well as spare parts interchangable. So if you are truly happy with your Magnum, don't hesitate to get another one.

What you do not want to hear:

At two years old your Oscars should be much bigger than they are. Your substandard housing/care has stunted their growth and compromised their health. Your Oscars will have a much shorter life span than they would have if housed properly.

With that much Oscar in that sized tank...You should at least be at 20x turnover. Seriously. That brings you into the realm of a sump with a big return pump as your cheepe$t alternative. You could go 10x turnover with twice weekly water changes and get back in the canister game. Another Magnum350 will only get you close to a 10x. You could modify the intake tube on your current Mag350 with a sponge type set-up and do the same for the powerhead but all you'll get is better filtration...no more turn-over.
If it were my tank I would keep the Mag350 as primary and get two AC110s or two Emperor 400s. I know these hang on filters and you will be pleased with their performance, they do introduce down tubes into the tank and arent as astetically pleasing but they will move water and increase both filtration and turnover. Plus, they are pretty cheap.

I have to tell you that the Marineland C series are very much worth looking at. Excellent customer service, great prices and some could argue stand closer to the foot of the Eheim pedestal.

They had one bad batch o 360's, fixed it and largely some of the stores locally say these are the least problematic filters they sell.

Parts are available and they are the second quietest filter in my humble opinion in the LARGE sizes. The smaller sizes I can't speak to.

Something to think about. But excellent design and quality.

Lol, tanks size doesnt stunt growth, stress level stunts an oscars growth. Might wanna do some reading before you shoot somebody down. Also, the "SMALLEST" is 8 inches, the biggest is 13-14, sounds spot on for a healthy tiger. I now have 2 magnums on the tank with a medium sized powerhead and they've never been happier.
Also, could somebody possibly enlighten me on WHY everybody is always buggin out about O's in hugmongo tanks? This is not my first rodeo with O's. I had 6 red oscars in a 90 gallon tank for 15 YEARS!!! The only reason they died is cuz we had to move and the retard I sold them to fed them nothing but feeders and Slim Jims. Believe me, filtration and water changes are key.
But, thanks everbody for the insight and info. O yea, if you want a good article to read up on, check this out, http://www.theoscarspot.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=4894&st=0&sk=t&sd=a

AQUACLEAR 110.....Best filter....i like it more than my Rena Xp3 lol way easier to use and none of those stupid cartriges

i have a 75 with a fluval 305 and aquaclear 110 and my water is perfect...of course i only have 2 9 inch oscars in mine....wow you must have a huge bioload...also, of course you can put multiple oscars in your tank but why would you want to crowd them in there like sardines? just because you can? jeesh i feel bad for my 2 in a 75 but they will be in a 125 in a week! that being said...a fish’s growth may be stunted if it is kept in too small a tank. Stunted growth is not the same as a fish simply "growing to match its environment" and it is neither healthy nor natural. Think of it this way: a St. Bernard puppy that is housed in a tiny closet for its entire life will not reach its full potential size… and that is essentially what is done to a fish kept in a tank that is too small. Any animal forced to live in cramped quarters for an extended period of time will suffer from atrophied muscles and fat deposits around its organs as a result of insufficient exercise. This, in addition to the unsanitary conditions, poor nutrition, and chronic stress that tiny tanks often engender, will stunt a fish’s growth.

My oscars arent cramped too bad really. I mean, if I had $2,500 Ide redo my 125 and throw my old sump system on it. Problem is, I dont have $2,500. LOL.
I change out 15 gallons twice a week religiously. As long as you keep up with water changes and A LOT of filtration oscars are wikid easy to keep.
