Hello,

I'm in the market for a new pc. I knew about computers 10 years ago, but with all the new hardware coming out literally every 2-3 months, I have no idea what to get. Of course this will be used for games, but I also need the software like Word and so on. I was at best buy last week and almost got the all in one with the i7, but was told a new i7 chip is coming out later this week and to maybe hold off on the purchase. I'm looking to spend about $1000. Any input is appreciated. I thought about building one off of YouTube, but several people told me to just buy one from best buy or costco. Said I'm really not saving any money from building one on my own.

Thanks

Like you, if you are not paying attention monthly to computers, you fall behind. About all I can recommend at this point is to get a desktop as they are better suited for gaming. Word is usually sold separately.

You will get a lot more efficient performance by building yourself. But if you have to buy from a retail store, try and find one with SSD for a hard drive and lots of fast memory. Any i7 is fine. Processors are so ahead of everything else, its hard to by a slow one. The current AMD's are great too and properly priced.

Focus on the (don't go cheap here) RAM and SSD and as least amount of (un-needed) software possible. If you cannot afford an SSD, try and get a Velociraptor or at the absolute least, a 7200k drive.

If you have a Fry's near you, they will build it in front of you.

Consider delay your purchase until Microsoft clean up the mess known as windows 8

All they will do is patch it.

I heard rumor that if you wanted your Win 8 to flip to Win 7, you have to buy the software.

To OP, if I was you just try to buy one with Win 7... if they are still out there

32gb ram,3tb hard drive
I think the graphic card was invidia
Gtx670 3gb

He wants fast for $1000 and for gaming...mac is not the answer. You can still download the enterprise trial of Windows 7 and it usually works fine, the only problem is you have to tell it f.u. when the upgrade prompt comes up. I'd say to use Linux because it's free and not Microsoft, but it's not the easiest to get working for playing games. Windows 8 is crap. And don't waste your money buying Word, just download OpenOffice.

Be careful on those all in ones. It's the one time I'll say buy the extended warranty (and I work on comps for a living). Most shops don't work on them, they have to be sent out to be worked on which is crazy expensive without that warranty.

For gaming, I'd recommend skipping the box stores and hit up tigerdirect or newegg. For the same price as the box store, you get a much better rig that's more streamlined, ie doesn't have a bunch of manufacturer crap added.
