I'm starting to research purchasing a new digital camera that can can take good general pics ( vacation, etc. ) and good aquatic pics. I don't really have much of a photography background, point-and-shoots being my only experience. I hope to educate myself with as much info from this site and would appreciate any advice from those who are obviously far more experienced and talented than I. I have decades of experience in the hobby and would like to give back to the hobby in new ways such as developing talks with power point presentations.

There's nothing wrong with P&S cameras, their prices seem to fall and their specifications rise week by week. But they will never be as versatile as DSLR designs. As we say in the north of England 'You pays your money, and you takes your choice.'
