hey guys!

I want to upgrade my existing 55 to a 120 60x24x18 but I live in a 3rd floor condo. My problem is I cant see how the floor is supported but the tank is located parallel to an outer wall. Any opinions? Included two pictures...

one more thing... I'm assuming the people below me have the same layout. Also the building was build in 2000 if that makes any difference.

thanks guys!

If you go and buy a high quality stud finder that has deep scan capability it will be able to shoot through the floor to find which way the joists are going.

With the fact it is an outer wall and newer construction you do have some things going for you.

Another suggestion is to get/build a stand that has a completely flat bottom to also help distribute the weight over a larger area.

Outside wall and new construction I would say as long as the joists run the opposite way as you are wanting your tank to be you are perfectly fine. A 120 really sin't that big of a tank or too much weight for a floor. You are looking at 1000 pounds not including stand and such. We think nothing of putting a waterbed in the center of a room with the least amount of support but we all worry about a fish tank. I know it is in more of a confined space but really if a floor can't support 1000 pounds you got a problem. Just my .02

My fiance just said something that made a ton of sense to me.....you wouldn't think twice for you and 4-5 of your friends to stand in the same spot about the same amount of weight and not evenly distributed. Honestly I think you would be perfectly fine.

If there is a floor above you remove the trim from you can light and you'll be able to see the floor above you. Maybe you'll find the floors are concrete or see where the i-beams are, at worst you'll have a better idea of what you're working with.

well i already know the floor is not concrete but was thinking maybe against an outer wall that would be enough to hold a 120 gallon....because under my floating wood floor is the original wood floor therefore wouldnt that distribute the weight more evenly? But honestly did any of you ever heard a tank bust through the floor?

I think you will be fine, but i'm no expert. You will also have to consider the weight of the new tank so say 1200 LBS + the 4-5 friends that will be standing around it talking when you have company over. So add another 1000 LBS or so for your friends + the tank. I still think it would be find the weight will be spread out across the floor. What are the dimensions of the 120 you want?
