Hi

I already have a 4ft community tank with CL's, Red line barbs and pleco. It's time for something new, but I don't really have enough space for the same size again.

So I'm interested in getting a pair (maybe more) of dwarf snakeheads in a smaller tank.
Problem is I'm lost in a sea of info about larger snakeheads, so it's time for my own thread.

Can anyone recommend some smaller species and give me some advice about what size tank i should be looking for and what sort of filtration I would need.

I'm completly new to this, but my thoughts so far were something like a 2ft 6 - 3ft tank, low water temp, low filtration. Maybe Channa Bleheri.

Any advice please?

hi
yes that setup is about right for bleheri, lots of plants aswell mate.
id go for the 3 foot tank instead of the 2ft,gives them a bit more space, all you need is a small group say 4 to 6 and over time a pair will form.i have a group of bleheri and have just had to seperate two from the six as i think a pair has now bonded so fingers croosed they will breed soon.let me know if you cant find any bleheri, now i have a pair ive got four im going to sell.

agree

Both a 2' or a 3' tank would be fine for that species, however bigger is of course always better, footprint is what matters more then height incase your looking at different tanks,

lot's of plants, completely cover the top with floating plants, you’ll get much more active and colorful fish that way, lower temps is good as they are sub tropical, make sure you have a good tank cover with NO holes, they will escape, I have had them jump out through the hole punched out for a filter pipe that was no in use...

The only thing I disagree with is low filtration they are predators and produce quite a bit of waste, you want to have good filtration but not allot of surface movement (so no HOB filters , also they don’t work well with floating plant cover !) I use canister filters,

Are there any other species that stay around a similar size? Or is Bleheri the most common?

I was hopeing to use the filter I've already got, a Fluval internal. I guess I may have to see how it goes.
Plants are a definate.

There are lots of smaller channa options, take a look at the species guide section above the forum

listen to thor mate he will tell you every thing you need to know.

Thanks for the advice guys. I'm on the lookout for 3ft tank now. Once I get it I'll be putting down some nutrient rich plant substrate with a bit of gravel on top. Then I'll be looking for plants and fish.
Thor, keep me updated on those few you want to sell. Newcastles a bit far from Oxford, so I don't know what you think about getting them shipped down?
