on my 150g i have 2 pengiun350s and a xp4, and im not really happy with it now, my mechanichal filtration sucks. i want to switch to 2 ac110s and have the xp4 packed full of bio-media, but do i still run the mechanichal sponges in the xp4 or can it be all bio?

i use 2 p350s and a cascade1500 on my 150. i packed the biowheels with ceramic rings and use them just for bio filtration. i use the 1500 just for mechanical filtration. Try doing this with your setup and see how you like it. I have21 african cichlids, 3 clown loaches, a yoyo loach, peacock eel, 4 bettas, a pleco, small catfish and 6 apple snails and never have any problems with me tank params. i never change anything in the 350s and clean out my 1500 every 3-4 weeks.

Always pre-filter the bio-material (and especially ceramics) .. canister / Wet Dry / HOB. It keeps the bio-material from clogging up as quickly.

Detritus has no good effect on bio-material ;).

Build up of detritus on your bio material will lead to high nitrates and the need to clean it frequently. This is a common problem with any filter that does not do a good job of mechanical filtration. If you want to switch things up, add finer mech to each filter and spread the bio material between them.

If you have a filter that can handle your fish load and you add another similar filter, then reduce the amount of bio media by 1/3-1/2 and fill the extra space with additional mechanical media that has a smaller micron rating.
